Senior Project Manager at the Mistoria Group, Cassim Kaaba, has almost 10 years experience in the renovation, maintenance and refurbisment industry, enabling him a very unique understanding of both aesthetic design and practical solutions. Each month, he will be providing sound information and guidance on how to problem solve, make your ‘design pound’ stretch further and achieve the very best results from your own development.
Preparation and Motivation
Firstly, decide whether the task is really for you. In addition to being a practical – and all too often necessary – undertaking, it should also be fun. I firmly believe that altering your perception of ‘decorating’ and adopting a positive mind-set will produce a more successful result.
However, should you feel that your leisure time could be best spent on something different, the job is physically beyond your capabilities, or specialist knowledge and equipment is required, I fully recommend acquiring the skills of those who are qualified and proficient.
Should you decide to undertake the project yourself, preparation is key. Prior to ‘lifting the lid off the paint pot’, take a step back and think about exactly what you wish to achieve.
Prepare your ideas and give yourself plenty of time to complete the job. At all times, be organised, methodical and tidy. This is a particularly good skill to develop and will save you time and even money.
Be selective. When it comes to your finances, think carefully about the area’s in which you feel you can realistically save. For example, paying £120 a roll for luxury wallpaper and spending only £60 per day for somebody to hang it, is, to my mind, an impractical (and potentially expensive!) allocation of funds.
There are no shortcuts. A sensible measure of time, money and enthusiasm will guarantee the exact result you desire.
